L.A. nickel [videorecording] / Branda Miller. [1983]

Shot from a window of the artist's flat to suggest a vantage point of surveillance, the first sequence of the video documents the raw reality of life on the streets in a Los Angeles Skid Row area called "the nickel." The video then shifts to an almost abstract dream-like sequence depicting a drive through the same streets at night. The soundtrack, composed by the Doo-Dooettes (Tom Recchion and Frederik Nilsen), features recordings of street sounds captured with surveillance microphones.
